“Over the last twenty years, Blue Morpho has been perfecting various recipes and blends of ayahuasca on our ayahuasca retreats. We have taken the traditional preparation methods and improved upon them to better support your experience. Blue Morpho now offers ayahuasca based on different strengths, duration, visionary capacity, and integration. The biggest advancement is ayahuasca with less side effects, that is gentler on the body and more visionary. It creates a deeper yet calmer experience that is easier on your body.” Hamilton Souther – Founder of Blue Morpho Ayahuasca Retreats Peru.

All ayahuasca is not made the same. Fundamentally it is a tea, and it can be made with a variety of ingredients. Legitimate medicine people and ayahuasca retreat centers protect the quality and safety of their ayahuasca. Unfortunately, the western commercialization of ayahuasca has led to a grey market where dangerous admixtures and secondary ingredients can be added. Be careful where and with whom you decide to drink. Ayahuasca should be considered a medicine and the quality of that medicine is extremely important.

The ayahuasca tea is made from a combination of two plants: the ayahuasca vine (Banisteriopsis caapi) and chacruna (Psychotria viridis). The ayahuasca vine and chacruna, along with several other admixture plants, are processed, mixed together, added to large pots and cooked over an open fire for 8+ hours. In the Blue Morpho lineage, the ayahuasca vine is described as the power source and the chacruna is described as the light. In Western terminology the ayahuasca vine contains an MAOI inhibitor harmine and harmaline. The chacruna contains DMT and the combination of which allows the DMT to be orally processed.

Without the presence of the MAOI found in the ayahuasca vine, the DMT would be broken down by an enzyme in the stomach that prevents the absorption of it. In the presence of the MAOI, the enzyme is inhibited and the DMT can be absorbed. This allows for the plant medicines to work in conjunction to create a prolonged experience that can last between 3 and 12 hours. It is the uncanny synergy of these two plants that forms the basis for all ayahuasca practice in the Amazon region.

Many lineages, including ours, work with a number of admixture plants. These admixture plants consist of medicinal tree barks and roots that bring a practical and powerful diversity to the overall experience. They help to structure and support the medicinal plant ceremonies, each offering a specific form of medicine and energy that affects the movement and expression of the ceremonial experience in different ways. This variety of plants enables the ceremonial facilitators to work with a greater number of medicine spirits, increasing their capacity and shamanic abilities. This is the equivalent of a Western doctor having a well-stocked medicine cabinet that allows them to treat as many ailments as possible.
