Location

Our retreats are held and the world-famous Heliconia Amazon River Lodge in Iquitos Peru. This allows Blue Morpho Tours to focus on your sacred experience while the Lodge and Lodge personnel ensure you have the best experience possible. We have had a ceremonial lodge custom built for our purposes.

Peru is like any other developing country. In general, Peru is safe although like much of the world, tourists are targeted for petty crime such as pickpocketing. Check with your Department of State to find out the current conditions for your planned trip

The best way to get to our location is to fly into Lima, Peru and then catch a connecting flight to Iquitos, Peru in the Amazon. Both cities have modern airports. From Iquitos, Heliconia Lodge will take you to the retreat center via a 90 min Amazon River boat ride. Check out Heliconia’s website for more information. 

Delicious “Ayahuasca Safe” Food is specially prepared by Heliconia’s master chefs. There is incredible variety of meals prepared with locally sourced ingredients. You will NOT go hungry!

Yes, there is running water. There is indoor plumbing with flush toilets and showers. There is a pool you will be able to use during your free time.

You should drink bottled water or purified water called “agua de mesa” or table water. According to the United States Department of State, “Local tap water in Peru is not considered potable. Only bottled or treated (disinfected) water should be used for drinking. Fruits and vegetables should be washed and/or disinfected with care, and meats and fish should be thoroughly cooked.”

With that said, the food at Heliconia Amazon River Lodge is safe to eat. We encourage all guests to drink only bottled water or table water provided by Heliconia Lodge.

Legalities

In Peru, Ayahuasca is considered a “Cultural Patrimony of the Nation” and not regulated as a drug. So, yes, Ayahuasca is legal in Peru.

No. We have had over 10,000 participants from 90+ countries. To our knowledge, there has not been a single case where a guest has experienced legal issues upon returning home. If you are still concerned, we suggest you contact your department of state.

Health Questions

It is currently very easy to travel into and out of Peru. Use general precautions when traveling as you would anywhere in the world. Check online with reputable travel sites to find any restrictions or changing regulations. 

For specific information, we suggest contacting your Department of State or the Peruvian Department of State.

No, you do not need a Covid vaccination to travel to Peru or participate in the retreat. You may need a PCR test if you do not have covid vaccines. 

Peru has strict COVID policies to limit the spread of Covid. We have limited the size of our groups to allow for social distancing in the ceremonial center. We take your health and wellbeing seriously. We have rapid Covid tests onsite, and have emergency vehicles to take an infected person to a modern hospital within 90 minutes of the lodge.

Yes, it is important that all participants are in good health to participate in our ceremonies. During our white-glove concierge registration process, we will review all details and make sure you are a candidate before receiving retreat payment.

We do not allow use of any medications of supplements while you are at our retreat center with the exception of birth control. Some medications can interact with our Ayahuasca medicine in negative and/or unpredictable ways.

We can NOT determine if stopping your medications is safe for your health. Please check with your own medical professional before changing any medications or supplements you may be taking.

You are not a candidate to participate in Ayahuasca ceremonies if you
1. Have heart conditions
2. Are on MAOI medications or any other medication that is counter indicated with Ayahuasca
3. Have a history of serious mental illness including schizophrenia, bi-polar, mania or multiple personality disorder.

If you have any doubts about your mental health, please check with your doctor to know if it is safe for you to drink ayahuasca.

We suggest checking with your Department of State to find their recommendations; however, there have been no reported cases of malaria at Heliconia Amazon River Lodge.

Ayahuasca

We home brew all our Ayahuasca, following our proprietary recipe from locally sourced ingredients. In fact, we harvest most of our ingredients from our land.

Our proprietary Ayahuasca recipe and brewing process was developed over 7 generations and is homemade, on-site, with locally sourced ingredients. We add up to 20 specifically selected medical plants to ensure deeper visions, a safer experience, and fewer negative side-effects.

Ayahuasca can be very safe. However, it does cause psychedelic experiences. Ayahuasca should only be used in the presence of experienced practitioners such as Hamilton Souther.

At the same time, we are not medical doctors and can’t know your particular health circumstances. So, please check with our own personal physician to determine if this will be safe for you.

Unfortunately, it is not possible to take Ayahuasca home with you. In many countries, Ayahuasca is not legal. Additionally, Ayahuasca should only be used in the presence of trained professionals.

Logistics

Our current retreats are all 6 days with 4 ceremonies.

If you are traveling from the USA, Canada, the European Union, or Australia you do not need a tourist visa to enter Peru. If you are a citizen of other countries you may need a visa. Please check with your Department of State to find your travel requirements to Peru.

Book your international flights to Iquitos, Peru. You will fly into Lima, Peru where you will clear customs. Then you will take a domestic connecting flight to Iquitos, Peru. The airports and jets are modern and comfortable.

Many of your favorite airlines fly into Peru. A few examples include: COPA, LANTAM, United Airlines, American, Delta, Frontier and Sky.

We suggest checking with your favorite travel site or your travel agent for more information.

You will fly into Iquitos, Peru. Blue Morpho will have airport pick-up ready to take you to your hotel. The day of the retreat, Heliconia Amazon Basin Lodge will take us via boat to the lodge. 

The trip from the airport to downtown is 20-30 minutes by taxi. From Iquitos to the lodge you will travel by speed boat for 90 minutes. The boat ride is provided by Heliconia and included in your retreat payment. This is a 90 minutes experience and you get to see the gorgeous Amazon River. 

Your accommodations, food, water and ceremonies are all covered. You still need to cover your travel to and from Iquitos, Peru.

While your donation covers your normal expenses while at the Lodge, you are responsible for all costs involved in getting to and from Iquitos. Any items you may want to bring with you are also your financial responsibility.
